Make sure that Enable is checked next to ActiveX Controls and Plug-ins. I then located the security update for XP numbered KB973346 which is the ActiveX killbits patch and removed it. Click on Security and then set a Custom Level. Simplify the use of Add-ons with specific entry points in each Google Workspace app, including the compose box of Gmail, the right-click menu of Drive, and the conferencing options in Calendar. I then removed the two ie8 updates and then removed ie8 itself.
First I went to add/remove programs and checked the 'show updates' box.
